Application
Streptolysin O from Streptococcus pyogenes has been used in streptolysin O (SLO) permeabilization. It has also been used to evaluate the barrier integrity and cytotoxicity of caco-2 and T84 IEC polarized monolayers.
Permeabilizes membranes to permit cellular uptake of large or charged molecules.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Thiol-activated toxin that permeabilizes animal cell membranes. The protein binds as a monomer to membrane cholesterol and subsequently polymerizes into large arc- and ring-shaped structures surrounding pores of >12 nm.
Streptolysin O (SLO), obtained from Streptococcus pyogenes has the capability to block osteoclastogenesis, induced by receptor activator of nuclear factor κ-Β ligand (RANK) through the NF-κB signaling pathway. Streptococcuspyogenes (GAS) is a bacterial strain that results in bacterial arthritis, osteomyelitis and implant infections.
